After seeing the trailer for Brave before The Avengers I turned to my friend and said: “There were no corsets in the Middle Ages.” As he pointed out it is just a Disney movie and it’s probably rife with many more anachronisms but that particularly common one always annoys me. I hate when “historical” romance novels have the wrong kind of corset on the cover (generally one from the Victorian era) because it really doesn’t take that much effort to know the right one. And, really, isn’t it common knowledge that stays didn’t come into play until the 1500s? Besides the whole “girl forced to wear a corset and it’s so uncomfortable” thing has been done to death so there was no need to inject it in a Medieval setting. I like that she doesn’t seem to pass out from it like most girls in this predicament at least.
